Honduran Curlyhair Tarantula

Spiders hatch from eggs that are laid by their mothers in groups of several hundred or more. We have had this spider since it was the size of a pencil eraser. Spiders have an exterior skeleton and so, as they grow, they must shed their “skins”. They do this on their backs, and shed their entire exoskeleton, including the linings of their eyes, lungs and stomach.

The Honduran Curlyhair is a type of tarantula. It will grow to ~5 inches long (including its legs).

The Honduran Curlyhair Tarantula gets its name from the long hairs on its legs. It lives in the cloud forests of Central America and eats insects and other very small animals.

There are many different types of tarantulas in the world, and they inhabit many different ecosystems. Some live high in the trees of the rainforest, while others live in sandy burrows in the desert. The Honduran curlyhair likes to burrow into the moist earth.

While some spiders  build webs to trap their prey, this one is an ambush hunter. It waits in its burrow for insects to crawl by and pounces on them. The venom in its fangs immobilizes its prey and causes its insides to turn to jelly. This allows the spider to drink its dinner.  Luckily for humans, the venom is not very strong. Therefore it is relatively harmless to humans.
