There are two main species of domestic cattle, Bos taurus and Bos indicus. Most of the cattle that are found in the United States are from the Bos taurus species. Many of these cattle breeds originated in Europe. Most Bos indicus breeds originated in Asia and Africa. These are some of the oldest breeds in the world. The first of these cattle are thought to have been domesticated as long ago as 3000 BC.
While there are many breeds of Bos indicus, or Zebu, cattle in Asia there are relatively few in the U.S.. They are generally categorized as Brahman cattle. The Miniature Zebu is a smaller version of these Brahmans. Miniature Zebu are also known as Nadudana cattle, which means “small cattle” in Hindi.
